4 Steps to a High Efficiency Furnace

The average gas furnace will keep you warm for about 20 years. So think long-term about efficiency and features that you want from your new furnace.

Quality Installation. No matter how well your new furnace is made, it won’t perform well without a quality installation. Make sure you hire a licensed contractor who is going to address your ductwork and other home needs in addition to new equipment. A high-quality installation will cost more upfront, but will save you in service costs and headaches down the road.

Two-Stage + Variable-Speed. Today’s furnaces can provide more home comfort than those from a decade ago. Many high-efficiency furnaces contain features that will make your home more enjoyable. Look for two-stage and variable-speed models that run at different output (capacity) levels to reduce noise and provide a better mix of air throughout the home (reducing hot or cold spots). Some extremely efficient furnaces, like the 97% AFUE Maytag® iQ Drive® modulating gas furnace, can vary the output level to provide the quietest and most comfortable indoor temperatures.

High AFUE. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) measures the efficiency of your furnace. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient your gas furnace is. Most mid efficient furnaces are around 65 -- 70% AFUE. Today’s minimum standard is 92% AFUE, but many rebates and incentives are tied to heating efficiencies above 95% AFUE. It’s important to ask Planetpower about the standards in your area and local utility incentives that are available.

Run the Auto Fan. Your new furnace’s thermostat may have a “fan on” setting. If so, consider running the fan year-round. It’s a great way to even out temperatures on multiple levels and reduce hot and cold spots as it continues to move air even when the furnace or air conditioner isn’t running. For even better temperature control, ask Planetpower about zoning.
