Case Study #2

30 year old Bungalow Country House

Ed Thompson

Fenwick, Ontario

Description

Ed Thompson lives in a 1492 sq. ft. Bungalow house in Fenwick Ontario. The house is 30 year old and sits on a 13-acre lot.

Concerns

Ed Thompson wanted a system that could efficiently heat his house with less cost and more comfort. His Existing system was a Air to Air Heat Pump and 20.8 KW Electric Forced Air System. The Air is Very Dry and uncomfortable.

He was concerned about the Humidity Levels in the home. He was concerned about the loop system it self, and the environmental impact of the system.

Agenda

We designed the system to be installed near the property lines to lessen its impact on finished grass landscape around the house. Planetpower.ca designed and installed the geothermal system with the customers direction and input. First, our experts calculated the required load on the house, the cost of the installation, and the expected savings very precisely using the Waterfurnace Software program GeoLink.

A horizontal 3 Circuits loop system using ¾ inch HDPE geothermal pipe, measuring in total 1800 ft. of HDPE Heat Hogg Geothermal Pipe in length was buried along property line with a distance of 10 ft from it, and at a depth of 5 feet. The header length was at 150 ft. of 1.25 inch HDPE Heat Hogg Geothermal Pipe. The trench length was 300 ft.

A Waterfurnace Dual Capacity Envision™ Forced Air unit was installed in the basement to provide space heating, cooling, and hot water. Ductwork was also installed to adapt to the existing ductwork in the house. The full installation of the geothermal system was completed in less then one week.

Conclusions

Ed Thompson in respect to Heating Cost is starting to enjoy great savings over the Electric Heating and Air to Air Heat Pump system. He also has reduced electrical bills from savings on air conditioning and hot water). The questionable cost of installing the geothermal system will be quickly repaid. Waterfurnace geothermal systems are of course, entirely non-polluting.

He is thrilled with the great comfort level geothermal energy provides. Even on the coldest days of last winter, the house was maintained at an even 72° F during the day and 65 at night, as desired. Ed was Amazed at the lack of cold spots anywhere in the house. Ed Thompson is very pleased with his geothermal system. He has, highly recommended geothermal to several people he knows in the Fenwick area.
