Case Study #1
20-Year Old Side Split with Basement.
Oil & Air Conditioner
Doug Funk
Jordan, Ontario
Description
Doug Funk & Family
The house is located in Jordan within the Niagara Region Ontario.
The region is characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, snowy
winters. The house was built in 1982 and has a 1,500 sq. ft. Side Split
with basement. A beautiful grape farm with 100's of acres in size is
located near to home.
Concerns
The family, are local grape farmer's, and they are environmentally conscientious. A System that did not use fossil fuels was of great interest. As well, the total energy efficiency of the house was a primary consideration. What was the best choice for the future? The house was previously heated with Oil Forced air, which was costing the homeowner $2,900 during the winter months. The house was relying on a 2 Ton Outside Condenser Type Air Conditioner, as well.
The Air Conditioner cost Approx $500.00 Per Year to Run, Depending on the type of summer it was.
Agenda
The Energuide for Homes program was used to analyze what improvements would be recommended to achieve the homeowner's desired energy efficiencies. The Energuide report made several suggestions, including the installation of a geothermal system, which would provide the single biggest improvement. The homeowner chose a Waterfurnace Envision Water to Air Solution with Desuperheater for helping with Domestic Hot Water.
Conclusions
Since the installation of the Waterfurnace geothermal system in December of 2007, the homeowner has reduced her heating bill by approximately 53%. The home also enjoys extremely comfortable cooling. At a set temperature of 72° F., combined heating and cooling costs in 2008 amounted to less then $1,000 so far. The homeowner is amazed at the comfort the geothermal system provides. As they commented, I'm in love with the system, when people come over they comment on how comfortable they feel. The homeowner always agrees, & very graciously recommends geothermal to People that are interested in knowing.
